This weeks guest poet is Denisa Mirena Piscu.

Denisa Mirena Pişcu is a Romanian poet residing in Bucharest. She was born on August 22nd, 1980 at Rădăuţi, Suceava county. She graduated the Faculty of Letters, University of Bucharest, followed by an interdisciplinary master at the Center of Excellence for the Study of Image. She has worked as journalist and translator and at present she is project coordinator at the Romanian Cultural Institute in Bucharest.

Denisa Mirena Pişcu published the first selection of her poems in Astra magazine (Braşov, 1992), followed by the publication of poetry, prose and essays in various cultural magazines in Romania, such as: Vatra, Viata Romaneasca, Bucureştiul Cultural, Ziua Literară, Suplimentul de Duminică, tiuk! , Fracturi (which founded the literary trend fracturism) etc.

During the faculty years she published the underground booklet fluffy and mechanical, carmen collection no.9 (2002).

The editorial debut was in 2003, at Vinea Publishing House, with a book of poems bearing the same title, Fluffy and Mechanical - which was awarded the prize for debut by the Association of Writers in Bucharest and the Writer’s Union, Brasov branch.

Her poems are included in the anthologies: Douămiismul poetic românesc (Generation 2000 in Romanian Poetry) by Ştefania Mincu, Pontica 2007; Generation 2000 by Marin Mincu (Pontica, 2004); The Second Top by Al. Cistelecan (Aula, 2004); Euridice Literary Circle, vol. 3, coordinated by Marin Mincu (Ziua, 2004).

During the years 2007-2008, she was involved in the international project “Overcoming Dictatorships – the Encounter of Artists, Poets and Writers”, sponsored by the EU, gathering artists and writers from the Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Romania and Poland. At present, she’s studying sound poetry for her master thesis.

This tour of Ireland sees Denisa launch her second full collection “Disposable People”, published by Galway Print and which will be available at the readings.

This weeks guest poet is Liz Gallagher.

Liz Gallagher is from Donegal and lives in the Canary Islands, Spain. She has degrees in Education and Computer Science and teaches English language in the Aula de Idiomas of Las Palmas University. At present she is doing doctoral research work on online learning and teaching.
Liz started writing about 4 years ago. She has poetry, fiction and non-fiction work published or forthcoming in The Wonderful World of Worders Anthology from Guildhall Press, Dead Drunk Dublin, The Pedestal Magazine, The Stinging Fly, Magma, Nth Position, The SHOp, Quartsillini, and The Oxfam Calendar 2009 and others. She is the featured poet in this winter’s (08/09) issue of The Stinging Fly. She was selected for the Best New Poets 2007 Anthology from Virginia University and she has been nominated twice for the Best on the Net anthology. She is also one of six winners for the Oxfam Ireland Poetry Calendar 2009. Her first full collection, titled The Wrong Miracle, will be published by Salt Publishing this year.

This weeks guest is Keith Armstrong (UK) & Rense Sinkgraven (Holland).

Keith Armstrong was born in Heaton, Newcastle upon Tyne, where he has worked as a community development worker, poet, librarian and publisher. He now resides in the seaside town of Whitley Bay, is coordinator of the Northern Voices creative writing and community publishing project which specialises in recording the experiences of people in the North East of England.
Keith often works and travels with folk-musicians from North East England, and he has written the lyrics for an album, Bleeding Sketches, by folk-rock band The Whisky Priests, with whom he has toured extensively in The Netherlands. He has also visited the European Parliament in Strasbourg to perform his poetry with musicians Pete Challoner and Ian Carr. He has recently inspired songs by Jez Lowe and by Joseph Porter of Blyth Power.

Rense Sinkgraven (1965) grew up in the village of Smilde in the Netherlands. He made his debut with the volume 'Bombloesem' (Bomb blossom; Uitg. kleine Uil, 2005). He was the city poet of Groningen, Newcastle's twin city, from 2007 until January 2009 and has visited Newcastle twice to perform his poems. His work has been published in many literary magazines and anthologies. Besides being a poet, he is also the lead singer in a band, 'Rense and his Scrambled Eggs'. They brought out a single and accompanying video entitled 'Eier back' (Bake Eggs), a Dadaist punk song.
His new volume of poetry appeared in January 2009: 'Sloop de stad met tedere woorden' (Demolish the Town with Tender Words; Uitg. kleine Uil).

This Mystery Poet has had three collections of poetry published and a new and selected poems is due out early 2010. This poet has been described as ‘having a cutting-edge humour combined with a deep interest in Celtic mythology’. The Mystery Poet is well known to Limerick poetry lovers but also has a big following in other parts of the country. All will be revealed this Wednesday…be there!!!

This weeks guest poet is Maureen Gallagher.

Maureen Gallagher was born in Monaghan, and now lives in Galway City.
Her poetry has appeared in magazines and journals in Ireland, Britain, The United States, Canada, France and New Zealand. Her work has been anthologized in Van Gogh’s Ear, Divas, Anthology 1, and others. She’s had poetry reviews and criticism published in Poetry Ireland Review, Chapman, The Cork Literary Review, Staple, The Galway Advertiser and Ropes.
She is an accomplished performer of her work and has read at many events in Dublin and Galway, including at Cúirt International Festival. Her work has been broadcast on RTE.
This is her first published collection.

Guy Hudson was born in Mansfield and grew up in a Lincolnshire village.He is interested in poetry as a spoken word medium and seeks to promote the oral tradition of poetry. This year he graduated from Lincoln University with a BA in English and hopes to teach Literacy in Prisons. He is married with two children.

Limerick to Rock at Cuisle Poetry Slam

Limerick delves into the strange and wonderful world of Slam poetry on Saturday the 18th October 9.00pm at the White House as part of the Cuisle International Festival of Poetry.
So just what is Slam, or as its increasingly being called performance poetry? Former winner of the Cuirt Grand Slam in Galway Trish Casey explains, “A Slam is a performance poetry competition. Performance poetry is the rock n’ roll of poetry - performed, chanted, rapped or ranted, it is a free-style form of spoken-word expression. Marc Smith coined the term “performance poetry”. He started the Uptown Poetry Slam at the Green Mill Tavern, Chicago, in 1987. Before Performance Poets were the Beat Poets of the 60’s and long before the Beat Poets were the Bards, and before the Bards were the spoken-word traditions of all cultures. We come from an ancient line.” She said.

So what can we expect at the White House next Saturday? Well For those who haven’t experienced one before, a slam is a performance poetry competition in which poets perform for not more than three minutes, sometimes, but not always, without the aid of the page in front of them. A panel of judges usually chooses the winner. Each judge scores the poet out of ten, and then both the highest and lowest score are disregarded; and the middle three scores totted up. Three cash prizes and a plaque for the overall winner is on offer.

To participate in this years Slam all you have to do is arrive on the night to the White House and give your name to the M.C. Barney Sheehan. Alternatively you can send on your name to the Limerick City Arts Office, City Hall, Limerick by the 17th October requesting inclusion or you can email your intention to participate to sdeegan@limerickcity.ie Once your name is on the list you will be called on the night with everybody else to make your contribution.

How To get There
The White House pub is located in the centre of Limerick City at 52 O'Connell Street. Its exact location is on the corner of Glentworth Street and O'Connell Street, opposite the Ulster Bank and the Bank of Ireland. It is approximately 5 minutes walk from the train and bus station - exit the station and go down Davis Street, pass Taits Clock continue on down Glentworth Street and the White House is on the right hand corner at end of street.
