Michael Farry, a retired teacher, is a member of Boyne Writers, Trim. He has had poems published in Crannog, Boyne Berries, Revival and Scríobh 2004-2006 and has had work commended or short-listed in Fish, Ledwidge, Scríobh, Golden Pen, Boyle, Éist and Goldsmith competitions.

This weeks guest poet is Martin Daws.

Surrey-born Martin Daws is a performance poet who has combined spoken word with various forms of music including hip hop and free jazz. He has also played Kalimba as an accompanying instrument. Daws’ work has shown a willingness to deal with social issues through personal perspectives and their narratives; multi-culturalism, identity, personal integrity, and the evolution of culture are all important themes for him.

From 1987-1994 Daws was active as a DJ, based in London, playing nationally and internationally in music venues and on pirate radio. In 1994 he was inspired to start writing for performance after experiencing the New York slam poetry scene. His interest in writing led him to take an MA in Literature and Cultural History in Liverpool (1997). From Liverpool, it was a short step (geographically) to Snowdonia where he has been living and working since 2001. Daws has been lucky enough to collaborate with many talented artists, including; electro-acoustician Rob Mackay, hip hop producers Skeematic, G-Frequency and Mr Phormula, dancer Sarah Mumford, and the musicians in Martin Daws’ quintet. He was runner up in the John Tripp Award for Spoken Poetry 2007, and second in the Glastonbury Festival Grand Slam 2008. His work has been broadcast by BBC Radio, published in international journals, and been performed extensively around the UK and Ireland and more recently on mainland Europe, in the USA and Mexico.

THIS WEEKS GUEST POET IS MARK ROPER.

Mark Roper’s collections include The Hen Ark (Peterloo/Salmon 1990), which won the 1992 Aldeburgh Prize for best first collection; Catching The Light (Peterloo/Lagan 1997); a chapbook, The Home Fire (Abbey Press 1998) and Whereabouts (Peterloo/Abbey Press 2005).

He was Editor of Poetry Ireland for 1999.

Even So: New & Selected Poems was published by the Dedalus Press in Autumn 2008.

This weeks guest poet is Maureen Gallagher.

Maureen Gallagher was born in Monaghan, and now lives in Galway City.
Her poetry has appeared in magazines and journals in Ireland, Britain, The United States, Canada, France and New Zealand. Her work has been anthologized in Van Gogh’s Ear, Divas, Anthology 1, and others. She’s had poetry reviews and criticism published in Poetry Ireland Review, Chapman, The Cork Literary Review, Staple, The Galway Advertiser and Ropes.
She is an accomplished performer of her work and has read at many events in Dublin and Galway, including at Cúirt International Festival. Her work has been broadcast on RTE.
This is her first published collection.

This weeks guest poet is Maighread Medbh.

Máighréad Medbh was born in Newcastle West, County Limerick. Since the publication of her critically-acclaimed first collection, ‘The Making of a Pagan’ (Blackstaff Press), in 1990, she has become widely known as a poet who applies much creative energy to the presentation of her work in performance. She has performed, to consistently good reviews, at a large number of venues in Ireland, Great Britain, the United States, mainland Europe, and on the broadcast media.

Máighréad’s other full collections are: ‘Tenant’ (Salmon Publishing, 1999); ‘Split’ (in ‘Divas!’, Arlen House, June 2003); and ‘When the Air Inhales You’ (Arlen House 2008). A CD was produced in 2002, and her work has been included in a wide range of anthologies. Máighréad has written three novels and is currently writing a four-volume fictional work for young adults. A story for children, set to music, was commissioned and broadcast by Ireland’s Lyric FM radio station in 2007 and 2008. She was awarded an Arts Council Bursary in 2008.
