The Winning Poem:
MY HOLIDAY HOME IN IRAQ
In my holiday home in Iraq,
there's a bomb at the front and the back.
When my housemaid comes in to empty the bin
she is strapped to the chin with explosives.
My utility man is a tall Taliban and
he's digging my grave near the roses.
In my holiday home in Iraq,
I'm not having much of a crack.
There's a curfew in force so I sit on my arse
from dusk until dawning while bombs without warning
explode all around me and drive me insane -
they're worse than those concerts in Slane.
From my holiday home in Iraq
if I go out I'll never get back,
so I stay in this room nursing feelings of doom
and think with resentment of unwise investment
and of places so far from this wrecking
such as Tang, Tullyglass, Termonfeckin.

Poetry Slam Tonight at 9.30pm
Limerick to Rock at Cuisle Poetry Slam
Limerick delves into the strange and wonderful world of Slam poetry on Saturday the 18th October 9.00pm at the White House as part of the Cuisle International Festival of Poetry.
So just what is Slam, or as its increasingly being called performance poetry? Former winner of the Cuirt Grand Slam in Galway Trish Casey explains, “A Slam is a performance poetry competition. Performance poetry is the rock n’ roll of poetry - performed, chanted, rapped or ranted, it is a free-style form of spoken-word expression. Marc Smith coined the term “performance poetry”. He started the Uptown Poetry Slam at the Green Mill Tavern, Chicago, in 1987. Before Performance Poets were the Beat Poets of the 60’s and long before the Beat Poets were the Bards, and before the Bards were the spoken-word traditions of all cultures. We come from an ancient line.” She said.
So what can we expect at the White House next Saturday? Well For those who haven’t experienced one before, a slam is a performance poetry competition in which poets perform for not more than three minutes, sometimes, but not always, without the aid of the page in front of them. A panel of judges usually chooses the winner. Each judge scores the poet out of ten, and then both the highest and lowest score are disregarded; and the middle three scores totted up. Three cash prizes and a plaque for the overall winner is on offer.
To participate in this years Slam all you have to do is arrive on the night to the White House and give your name to the M.C. Barney Sheehan. Alternatively you can send on your name to the Limerick City Arts Office, City Hall, Limerick by the 17th October requesting inclusion or you can email your intention to participate to sdeegan@limerickcity.ie Once your name is on the list you will be called on the night with everybody else to make your contribution.

Poetry Workshop
Poetry Workshop at Limerick Writers' Centre
Sat 25th Oct 10.00am to 12.00noon
Aspiring poets are invited to participate in a Poetry Workshop with poet Tim Cunningham at the Limerick Writers’ Centre, 12 Barrington Street, Limerick Sat 25th Oct 2008 starting at 10.00am and running to 12.00 noon.
Those interested are asked to contact Dominic Taylor at 087 2996409 or email limerickwriterscentre@gmail.com Fee €10.00.
Tim Cunningham was born in Limerick in 1942 and educated at Limerick C.B.S. and Birkbeck College, London. He has lived in Limerick, Tipperary, Dublin, Trowbridge, London, Newark (Delaware) and, presently, Billericay. He has published and read widely. His first collection, ‘Don Marcelino’s Daughter’ was published by Peterloo Poets in 2001 and reprinted in 2002 and 2004. His second collection ‘Unequal Thirds’ was published in 2006, again by Peterloo. His new collection, Kyrie, is shortly to be published (Oct 16th) by Revival Press - the imprint of the White House Poets. ‘Kyrie’, is firmly rooted in nineteen fifties’ Ireland – De Valera’s Ireland – a place and time, apparently so distant now, when religion permeated almost every aspect of life. And it is the lives that are celebrated here, with their pieties, loves, frustrations and hopes, the perennial human condition woven into the sacraments and liturgies of the everyday. Not quite the Limerick of Angela’s Ashes but nevertheless Tim Cunningham has continued on where Frank Mc Court left off but this time in poetry and verse.
