This weeks guest is poet Neil Mc Carthy.

Neil McCarthy is originally from West Cork but is now based in Galway. He has spent time writing in Australia, South America, Asia and Scandinavia where he has also been a guest reader at many literary events. He has also read at The Whitehouse in 2005 and the Cuisle Festival in the same year. He has published two chapbooks of poetry ( Voicing the Bell, Naked in Vienna) and has performed as part of The Voice & The Verse in the Prague Fringe Festival.

This week the White House Poetry Revival presents a double bill with Canadian poets Celeste Auge and Melanie Francis.

Celeste Auge was born in Canada, but moved to Ireland when she was twelve years old. She now lives in County Galway. Her poems have appeared in a wide variety of literary journals. She has read her work at Poetry Ireland Introductions and also read at the inaugural Cuirt Festival/Over The Edge showcase reading in April 2006.? In 2006 she was awarded the Publication Assistance Grant by Galway County Council. Tornadoes For The Weathergirl, a chapbook of her poems, was published in November 2006.

Mélanie Francès was born in Paris on October 18th, 1972, with Canadian and French origins and grew up in France. As a young girl, she lived for four years in New Delhi, India, where she learned English and started a lifelong love story with the language. As a college student, she discovered her gift for writing and developed an interest in the arts and American literature. She later moved to Montreal in Canada to pursue her graduate studies at Concordia University and obtained an M.A. Degree in English and Creative Writing. In 2001, she published her first chapbook of poetry, The World is in your Head, with Ginninderra Press in Australia. She lives in Montreal where she works in communications and public relations and is currently working on her first novel about the immigrant experience and the birth of the movies at the beginning of the century in the USA.

John Carmody Crowned Cuisle Slam Champion '07

Former Cuisle poetry Slam champion John Carmody regained his crown lat night, Saturday the 20th October, at the White House bar in Limerick. John who last won the crown four years ago was run a close second by Ciaran O Driscoll, himself a former winner in 2005. The White House was packed with poets and interested onlookers as the contestants went through their paces. Many of the guest poets who appeared at Cuisle this year were in the audience and were absolutely delighted with the proceedings and the friendy athmosphere generated by this celebration of poetry.

Launch of Issue 5 of Revival Poetry Journal plus a reading by guest poet Keith Armstrong.

The White HousePoets launch Issue five of REVIVAL Poetry Journal next Wed 17th Oct at the White House as part of Cuisle -Limerick City International Poetry Festival. The launch will be performed by the Mayor of Limerick Cllr. Ger Fahy at 9.30pm.

Copies will be available on the night PRICE: €7.00

Submissions are now being accepted for Issue 6 to be published in Jan. 2008. Deadline for submissions is the 30th November 2007.

Keith Armstrong was born in Heaton, Newcastle upon Tyne, where he has worked as a community development worker, poet, librarian and publisher, he is coordinator of the Northern Voices creative writing and community publishing project which specialises in recording the experiences of people in the North East of England.

He has organised several community arts festivals in the region and many literary events featuring the likes YevgeYevtushenko,Ian McMillan, Sean O'Brien, Attila the Stockbroker, Brendan Cleary, Adrian Mitchell, Julia Darling, Jackie Kay, and Benjamin Zephaniah. He was founder of Ostrich poetry magazine, Poetry North East, Tyneside Writers' Workshop, Tyneside Poets, East Durham Writers' Workshop, Tyneside Trade Unionists for Socialist Arts, Tyneside Street Press and the Strong Words and Durham Voices community publishing series.

Cuisle 2007; Limerick City International Poetry Festival

17th – 20th October

2007 marks the eleventh Cuisle Festival in Limerick City, celebrating local, national and international excellence in poetry. The festival will take place from Wednesday 17th to Saturday 20th October with 23 poets from 6 different countries visiting Limerick over 4 days.

Some of this years line up of poets include international visiting poets Keith Armstrong (UK), Tom Cunliffe (UK), John Davies (UK), Hugh Dunkerley (UK), Gary Gach (USA), Barbara Korun (Slovenia), Ivica Prtenjaca (Slovakia), Jackie Willis (UK). Irish poets of international importance include Michael O’Siadhail, Michael Longley, Desmond O’Grady, Gabriel Fitzmaurice, Eiléan Ní Chuilleanáin, Seán Lysaght, Cathal Ó Searcaigh, Paddy Bushe and Theo Dorgan.

Five book launches will take place during the festival, each title an exciting new presence in the literary Irish writing scene; two journals of poetry (i) REVIVAL No. 5, and (ii) The Stony Thursday Book. Fifty Years 1957-2007 by Knute Skinner, and Twenty One Sonnets by Gabriel Fitzmaurice, both published by Salmon Poetry. Desmond O’Grady’s book My Alexandria will also be launched.

To celebrate the achievements of Limerick poets, a series of lunchtime (1pm) readings at Isaacs in O’Connell Street will celebrate the work of Teri Murray, Gerard Sheehy, Noel Harrington and Dominic Taylor.

The annual Cuisle Debate will take place on Saturday 20th at 3pm. The title of this year’s debate is ‘Can Poetry Make Things Happen?’ Paul Muldoon wrote “for poetry can make things happen, not only can, but must …..” Seamus Heaney in his Nobel lecture of 1995 acknowledges the power of poetry - “…..: the power to persuade that vulnerable part of our consciousness of its rightness in spite of the evidence of wrongness all around it, the power to remind us that we are hunters and gatherers of values, that our very solitudes and distresses are creditable ….”. Cuisle will bring together and harness all the energies of the poets to rediscover the power and the pulse of poetry.

Limerick City Gallery of Art and Limerick City Library will host workshops relating to poetry during the festival, including Bosca Filíocht (Poetry Box) where each child will be asked to pick a verse from a descriptive poem and to illustrate that poem with the help of artists Suzannah O’Reilly and Fiona Quill. There is also an opportunity for children to be part of a poetry master-class during the festival, places are limited, booking is essential.

This weeks guests are Australian poets Earl Livings and Ray Liversidge.

Earl Livings has had poetry and fiction published in journals and anthologies around Australia and also in Britain, Canada, the USA, and Germany. He is the current editor of Divan (www.bhtafe.edu.au/divan), Australia’s first all-Australian online poetry journal. His first book of poetry, Further than Night (Bystander Press), was published in 2000. Earl has recently completed a PhD in Creative Writing and is working on his next collection of poetry

Ray Liversidge is an Australian poet. His first book of poetry, Obeying the Call, appeared in 2003. His verse novel The Barrier Range, which draws on the expeditions of early Australian explorers Burke and Wills, and Charles Sturt, was published in 2006. Ray has his own website at www.poetray.com.au. He is currently working on a manuscript on the work and lives of dead poets.
