The White House Poets in association with Foras na Gaeilge continue their series of bi-lingual poetry readings this Wednesday 1st Nov. 2006 at 9.00pm in the White House pub, 52 O Connell Street , Limerick

This weeks guest is bi-lingual poet Cathal O Shearcaigh.

Cathal O Searcaigh was born in Donegal and lives at the foot of Mount Errigal. His collections of poetry include Homecoming/An Bealach 'na Bhaile, Na Buachailli Bana, and Ag Tnuth Leis an tSolas, for which he received The Irish Times Litrature Prize for the Irish language in 2001. His plays include Mairimid leis na Misteiri, Ta an Ton ag Titim as an tSaol. He has been awarded the Sean O Riordain Prize for Poetry in 1993. He is a member of Aosdana.

The White House Poetry Revival has being going now for three years. Every Wednesday the famous old world bar is transformed into a centre of culture as poets recite their latest work. Barney Sheehan and Dominic Taylor , the people behind the revival of poetry at the White House, continue to attract the best of Irish and International poetry to Limerick. The White House Poets would like to acknowledge the involvement of the Arts Council, Poetry Ireland, Foras na Gaeilge, Limerick City Council and the White House Bar for their continued support that has helped make the White House one of the pre eminent venues for poetry in Ireland.

As usual the reading is preceded by an open mic session in which anyone who wishes to read is invited to do so. Complementary finger food is provided and proceeding commence at 9.00 pm.

This weeks special guest poet is Galway born Gary King.

Born in Galway in 1963. Has been writing for a number of years and been published in The Burning Bush, West 47, Crannog, Poetry Monthly and a range of other poetry journals. He has had a chapbook of poems published in 2004 by 'Over the Edge' called 'Ambiguous lights'. A finalist in the Cuirt festival Grand Slam this year he was recently the winner of the Galway Art Centre monthly poetry slam held in the 'ruby room' of the Kings Head pub. As a result of this he has qualified for the grand slam final of the Cuirt Festival Slam in April 07.
In addition to poetry he also writes fiction and has recently read publicly from a work entitled 'A Week in the Life of an Opinion'

Miceál Kearney from Galway wins inaugural Cuisle Performance Poetry Slam

Performance poet Miceál Kearney from Galway last Friday took First Prize at
The Inaugural Grand Slam of the CUISLE Poetry Festival in The White House in Limerick.

With two brilliant poetic performances, displaying great timing, voice control, humour and audience command, Miceál came out the clear winner among the 19 entrants.

Miceál is now on his way to Brighton in May '07 to continue his environmental work.

Gordon Hewitt from the Belfast Poets' Group took a very deserving second place, with Limerick poet Chris Collins taking third.

Congratulations to Dominc Taylor and Barney Sheehan on the organization
and mighty success of the Cuisle Inaugural Grand Slam!
A very high standard has been set and great encouragement given to the poets
who came from every corner of Ireland - and from England, Scotland and the USA.

We all look forward to a long run of the Cuisle Grand Slam.

This weeks special guest is Irish American poet Carlos Reyes.


CARLOS REYES is an Irish-American poet blessed with an Hispanic name. Of hiswork Carolyn Kizer has said: ³Mr. Reyes is one of our local and nationaltreasures. His poetry is as clear and strong as his social conscience. Oneis always struck by his sensual and sensory qualities: the touch, taste,feel, color of things, and his ability to capture a mood, a world, in ahandful of lines.
His books of poetry include The Shingle Weaver¹s Journal(1980), a finalist for the Elliston Prize, Nightmarks (1990) and A SuitcaseFull of Crows (1995), a Bluestem Winner and a finalist for the Oregon BookAwards in 1996. He has also published nine chapbooks, including TheWindows(1967),The Prisoner (1973), The Orange Letters (1976), At DoolinQuay (1980), Open Doors, a translation of Ecuadorean poet Edwin Madrid¹s³Puertas abiertas²(1999). ³Oilean Agus Oilean Eile² (Two Islands) wasselected as a finalist in the 1993 and 1995 National Poetry SeriesCompetition . His poetry manuscript³This Metaphor for the World Rubén DaríoGave us Azul,² was a finalist for the 1999 Backwaters Prize. At the Edge ofthe Western Wave, a finalist for the 2002 National Poetry Series, waspublished by Lost Horse Press in 2004. At present, in addition to his almostdaily poetry writing, he is beginning to compile the poems for acollected/selected works, which hopefully will appear before his 75thbirthday.
His latest book of poems is At the Edge of the Western Waverecounts to some extent his thirty years or so experience in Ireland. He lives in Portland, Oregon with his wife, editor and book designerKaren Checkoway, and travels to Ireland, where he maintains a late 18thCentury cottage, and other interesting places such as Cuba, Ecuador, Greeceand Spain. Since 1982 he has worked in the Artists-in-Schools program, YoungAudiences and Writers-in-the-Schools teaching poetry writing to all gradelevels.

This weeks special guest is poet Margaret O Shea.

Margaret O'Shea was born in Killarney, Co. Kerry. Writing seriously since 1993 she was a member of Fia Rua Writers Group and her poems have appeared in numerous literary journals and magazines. She was part of the Arts Council funded team which presented the Earc Uisce Chiarrai project in 2004 and one of 18 artists selected by Kerry County Council for their Smaointe initiative. She was involved in the Bricin Winter Arts Festival and has read from her work nationally including Feile na Bealtaine, Cuirt, and Poetry Ireland's Introductions Series.

Cuisle Poetry Festival-Highlights At The White House

Launch of REVIVAL - the White House poetry journal.
Wed. 18th Oct. at 9.30pm in the White House.
The WhiteHousePoets have for the past three years held their White House Poetry Revival readings in the White House pub in Limerick City.
Over a year ago Microphone On – an anthology of poetry read at the White House was
published. Now the WhiteHousePoets are publishing REVIVAL a journal of contemporary poetry, in chapbook format, which will be published four times a year.

The Cuisle ‘Limericks’ Competition

Thursday 19th Oct in the White House pub at 9.30pm
This year Cuisle is organising a competition to find the champion 'limerick' writer of Limerick. Those interested in entering the competition are asked to submit their entries to the:
Limerick City Arts Office, City Hall, Limerick by the 13th October.
Or by email to sdeegan@limerickcity.ie
The top 20 entries will battle it out for the title.

The Cuisle Performance Poetry Slam
Fri Oct 20th at 9.30pm White House Pub, Limerick
Performance poets and spoken word artists will battle it out at the inaugural Cuisle Performance Poetry Slam. The prize on offer to the winner is a trip to Brighton to perform at their festival in May 2007 plus lots of other prizes on the night. All you have to do is arrive on the night to the White House and give your name to the M.C. Barney Sheehan. Alternatively you can send on your name to the Limerick City Arts Office, City Hall, Limerick by the 13th October requesting inclusion you can email your intention to participate to sdeegan@limerickcity.ie

Back again for the third year the White House Grand Slam brings the festival to a close with fun and poetry for everyone. Everyone is invited to bring along their poems - odes, sonnets, limericks, in fact any old thing you might have tucked away in an old drawer and battle it out for the top prize of €300.
